Know When to Cite Your Work


Maybe you’re not sure when to cite.  Here’s a handy chart to help you figure out when you should cite:


Cite Don't Cite
When you have a quotation from a source (make sure to use quotation marks) When you use your own words
When you paraphrase When the idea you are using is common knowledge or a generally known concept
When you use specific facts from a resource When you use any of your own ideas
